SportFishAfrica, is South Africa’s only tour operator specialising in sportfishing tours to a wide variety of fresh and salt water destinations, both within Africa and to Indian or Atlantic ocean island resorts.

The Johannesburg-based company has been in existence for 15 years, during which time it has earned a solid reputation within the tourism industry for reliability and personal service. Though initially catering almost exclusively for South Africans outbound, in recent years a growing awareness of Africa’s sportfishing potential has seen a steady increase in international clientele, in particular from Europe.

Founded originally by Charles Norman, a well-known angling writer, photographer and documentary filmmaker, the company has grown a solid reputation as a business that offers excellent personal service and a fair deal.
The business has always been run by and staffed with experienced fishermen who love to travel and personally experience Africa’s fishing destinations. This has given them an excellent opportunity to evaluate the continent’s sportfishing potential and package carefully chosen resorts, hotels and lodges.

In making these choices there were three criteria. The first, obviously, was that each area had to offer good and consistent sportfishing, be it freshwater or salt, from deepsea to flyfishing. The second was the area had to have an established operation that offered quality service with good boats and crews. And thirdly, that agreement was reached with this operation whereby tours could be packaged at a price at least as good as a client could get by booking direct.

Countries currently marketed by SportFishAfrica include the Indian Ocean islands of Seychelles, Madagascar and Mauritius, Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania, the United Arab Emirates, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Botswana, Namibia, Angola, Gabon and Ghana, and the Atlantic Ocean islands of Sao Tome & Principe.
SportFishAfrica offers a schedule of set departures each year, but for the most part each safari is packaged according to client needs and budget. All possible costs are included, and those not included are fully detailed – we dislike “hidden costs” as much as you do!

Probably the company’s greatest single benefit to clients is its experience of Africa’s fishing waters and seasons. Almost every area marketed has been visited by at least one member of the team, and details such as if a group includes non-fishing partners, or whether experiences other than purely fishing are required, also play a major part in recommendations. And while angling is the company’s core business, it is not the only business – beach holidays in Kenya or Seychelles, corporate breakaways or conferences, wildlife safaris, liveaboard yachts or Scuba diving … SportFishAfrica does it all.

In these days of the internet it’s becoming increasingly simple to source destinations on the web. Contacting an operation direct has its disadvantages, however. Many operations are going to say whatever’s necessary to get your business, even if that means fudging the truth a little about seasons or the quality of their fishing.

It’s always going to be our client’s interests that come first – and it’s because this is our core philosophy that we have such a high degree of repeat business. After all, if you have a bad trip – we feel the pain. And that’s as it should be.”
