| DESTINATIONS |
| FLAMINGO LODGE | |
General Info |
|
Flamingo Lodge is in Southern Angola. It offers fantastic surf fishing as well as offshore fishing. This area has been protected by thirty years of civil war, leaving fish stocks in a pristine state! The Cunene river mouth can be reached from Flamingo Lodge over low spring tides. It is a drive of about two hundred kilometers. |

Fishing |
|
This area is famous for its catches of big kob, big garrick and big shad. These fish are not only bigger than in other areas, but very plentiful. There are also Bronze whaler sharks here, large yellowbelly rock cod and massive skates. Fishing is done either by casting plugs or spoons into the surf from the beach, or sitting with a bait out, waiting for the big one. Live bait does very well here. |

How to get there |
|
The most practical way of getting to the Flamingo Camp is to fly into Namibe (Yuri Gagarine) airport (co-ordinates: FNMO 15°16'S, 12°10'E), in a private or a chartered light aircraft. The runway is in very good condition and is in daily use by large jets. Phone the lodge with an ETA the day before you arrive so that they can inform the relevant authorities of your impending arrival, meet and guide you through immigration and customs, and then take you to your destination. There are also international airline flights between Windhoek and Lubango every Thursday with TAAG Angolan Airlines, you may depart from Cape Town or Jhb to Windhoek with Air Namibia and visitors can be met there and driven the 250km to Flamingos camp. For those intending to drive, 4 x 4 vehicles are necessary as many of the routes involve driving in sand and over very broken rocky terrain. We can arrange for a guide to meet you at the border to smooth your passage through the border formalities, and also through any check points that you may encounter on the way. For anyone not intending to use the main roads a guide is necessary as some of the tracks are very indistinct and it is easy to get lost. No-one should attempt to drive the coastal route between the Cunene mouth and Tombwa without a guide as it may easily result in the loss of a vehicle. Our packages are based on flights from Jhb to Windhoek with Air Namibia, and then from Windhoek to Lubango with TAAG - Angolan Airlines. These flights ONLY operate THUR-THUR presently. The costs for these flights range from R4,140.00 ppr excl. taxes. |

Visas are necessary for entry into Angola, and visa applications must be accompanied by a letter of invitation from the lodge. There are often considerable delays before the issue of visas - so apply well in advance (at least a month). The visas are valid for 30-day visits and the date of entry into Angola must be within 60 days of the date of issue. We are able to assist in the processing of the Angolan visas for you (R1150.00 pp) and would require 2 x colour ID photographs per visa applicant. You will also need to have a valid passport, which must have at least 3 x clean pages available. |

Special Notes |
|
The Camp supplies all bedding, pillows, towels etc, as well as 3 meals a day prepared by an excellent Angolan chef. Beer and cool-drinks are also provided, but serious drinkers must provide their own spirits, wines and liqueurs. The weather is usually warm and sunny, and the breeze seldom exceeds 12 knots (except at the Cunene where it can really blow!). It is therefore not necessary to bring waders, boots, oilskins or winter woollies. Shorts, T-shirts, a jersey and light windbreakers are quite sufficient in the daytime, but warm jackets and track-suit pants are often necessary in the evenings, when it may be cool (especially if camping out). Limited supply of Rock-and-surf casting and boat fishing tackle is provided but anglers should consider bringing their own favorite reels, spinners and plugs. We recommend 3-4 ounce spinners and plugs; and 12-18cm “Rapalas” for those who would like to fish from a boat. Light “bass”-type and flyfishing tackle is not provided. Also not supplied is diving and spearfishing equipment. Other items that must be brought by visitors include personal toiletries, cameras and film, binoculars, hats, sunglasses, sunscreen, malaria prophylactics and diarrhea medicine. |
