Island lodges we package are Pestana Bazaruto Lodge and Indigo Bay Island Resort and Spa on Bazaruto Island, about 750 km north of Maputo and 20 km offshore; Benguerra Lodge; Marlin Lodge and the all new luxury Azura on Benguerra Island (separated from Bazaruto by a kilometre-wide channel).

Fishing
FISHING SEASONS
The summer months from October-March are main marlin time, Bazaruto Archipelago being the Southern Indian Ocean’s top black marlin destination, with January/February probably the top months. December/January can be very hot.

Sailfish are plentiful in summer, but also usually appear off the archipelago in large numbers in July/August. Most general gamefish species are present year round, particularly kingfish/trevally, (including Giant Trevally), queenfish, king mackerel ('couta), and queen mackerel (Natal snoek), though warm-water types such as wahoo and dorado are uncommon during the winter months. Rock and surf fishing is consistent year round, with Bazaruto being the top surfcasting destination and large Ignoblis kingfish the main species sought, either on live bait or casting tackle; big surface poppers being the most successful lure. Very big springer (ladyfish), bonefish, stumpnose, pompano and barracuda are also taken all year from the beaches, along with skates, rays and sharks, mostly blackfin.

Accomodation

PESTANA BAZARUTO LODGE, BAZARUTO ISLAND... ... is the largest of the archipelago islands at 35 km long. It has beach vehicles, and for that reason is especially good for rock and surf anglers. For deepsea anglers, main marlin waters are directly off Bazaruto north point, which means closer to Bazaruto Lodge than Benguerra Lodge. The lodge was refurbished and renovated in 2005, with routine maintenance and repairs then carried out after the cyclone in 2007. Pestana Bazaruto Lodge consists of a central dining room and bar, with freshwater pool right on the beach. Accommodation has been upgraded and consists of 15 standard chalets; 2 family chalets; 8 superior chalets and 1 honeymoon chalet, and still is in thickly thatched A-frame bungalows set along the beach beneath coconut palms, all en suite, with fans, electricity, hot and cold running water, and all 26 chalets are now with air-conditioning.

PESTANA BAZARUTO LODGE RATES: Accommodation: rates include three meals per day, laundry and government taxes. Certain complimentary extras are now included in their rates depending on duration of stay and standard of bungalow type booked (i.e. superior or honeymoon). Accommodation rates vary between US$235.00 per person sharing to US$290.00 per person sharing. Rates are dictated according to the seasons (low or high season) and the type of chalet booked or available. Please contact us for your tailor-made package. BAZARUTO LODGE FISHING & DIVING: Bazaruto's water sports consortium is run by an independent company, Gone Fishin’. Their boats are seven-metre Cobra-cats, very wide, comfortable for four anglers, powered by twin-90 hp motors. Boat rates listed exclude fuel (US$1.80 per l) and start at US$380 (Reef Runner full day 10hrs) / US$300 (half day 6hrs). Please contact us for your fully-inclusive package rate where we will send you the updated detailed list of excursions and activities available through Gone Fishin’.

INDIGO BAY ISLAND RESORT AND SPA, BAZARUTO ISLAND…
About 25 km south of Bazaruto Lodge, on the sheltered west coast of Bazaruto Island, is Indigo Bay Island Resort and Spa, which started life in the early nineties as Sabal Bay, briefly changing its name to Turtle Bay and finally to well known Indigo Bay. The resort has been completely rebuilt and upgraded and even further now in 2007, the resort underwent high standard maintenance renovations giving birth to the all new Indigo Bay Island Resort and Spa. The resort now offers luxurious en suite, airconditioned accommodation in up-market thatched chalets overlooking the beach, plus bay view rooms (which are not on the beach). Very little remains of the old lodge, other than the raised wooden deck offering splendid views of sunsets over Africa (Indigo’s reception desk must be the only one in Africa from which, once a month, you can simultaneously see the full moon rising over Bazarutro and the sun setting over Africa . . .) The main bar/dining area of Indigo Bay Island Resort and Spa is set on a ridge about 40 metres off the beach and 20 metres above it. In the area between the two is a large swimming pool and pool bar connecting lodge and beach. The food, with a strong emphasis on seafood, is simply superb. There is a small conference centre and the lodge has a Scuba diving facility. There are non-motorised water craft for guests use, and six horses – a Bazaruto first and only– have been imported. Drives across the island and over the high sand dunes guarding the ocean side of the island are possible, but it’s quite a trek and we don’t recommend Indigo Bay a surfcasting destination. But the resort just 15 minutes by boat from Bazaruto’s Southern point and the productive gap known as « Kingfish Alley » between Bazaruto and Benguerra, is ideally situated for light tackle and fly anglers in particular. The coconut palms of Paradise Island/Santa Carolina are just visible on the horizon, and between the resort and this tiny island many sandbars break the surface at low tide. Deep channels between these sandbars are productive of queenfish, king and queen mackerel, and other gamefish that hunt against the sandbars and sometimes chase shoals of baitfish right out of the water around your feet. Serious deep sea anglers will take a boat out through the gap between Bazaruto and Benguerra islands, to the continental drop-off about 12 km out, where encounters with black marlin, sailfish, wahoo, dorado and other pelagic species can be expected. Something to look forward to is the new project Rani Resorts has undertaken which is to develop a small lodge on Paradise Island (perfect reefs for fly-fishing). Development begins in 2008, with plans to have the lodge open for tourists in 2010. We are very excited to have this ideal location available in the future.

INDIGO BAY ISLAND RESORT AND SPA RATES:
Accommodation: rates include three meals per day, bottled waters in rooms, teas/coffee, non-motorised watersports/ equipment hire and Marine Parks Levies. Rates vary according to the seasons and start from US$288.00 per person sharing (low season) to US$485.00 per person sharing (high season). Please contact us for your tailor-made package. From time to time we are afforded the opportunity to promote specials, which allow our clients to enjoy the best of Rani Resorts at very competitive discounted rates. * CURRENT SPECIALS INCLUDE FREE NIGHT OFFERS* THE BOATS: Indigo Bay Island Resort and Spa has four fishing craft. These are “Quirimba,” a 23 ft NoosaCat skiboat, and “Ibo,” a 31 ft GulfCraft along with “Vamizi” also a 31 ft GulfCraft Walkaround, “Rola” is a 23ft King cat which can fish up to three anglers comfortably. There’s also a 12 ton barge used primarily for sunset cruises. Indigo Bay carries a wide range of Shimano trolling tackle, supplied with charters, but anglers should take their own casting tackle. “Ibo & Vamizi” can fish four clients. The two skiboats “Rola & Quirimba” fish three anglers. Please contact us so that we may send you a detailed excursions and activities lists.

BENGUERRA LODGE, BENGUERRA ISLAND... ... offers luxury accommodation in thatched chalets on stilts just off the beach beneath a narrow strip of tall coastal forest; the only such forest on any of the islands, which is mostly scrub-covered. As a result, Benguerra Island has excellent birdlife around the lodge. Benguerra Lodge has also recently undergone further renovations and upgrades to their lodge.

BENGUERRA LODGE RATES: Accommodation: Rates include all meals and snacks, all beverages (excluding selected imports), laundry, Med-rescue insurance and all activities, with the exception of diving, fishing and yacht excursions. They now offer 2 Bungalows (US$400 per person per night sharing) 2 Cabanas (US$570 per person per night sharing) 10 Casitas (US$675 per person per night sharing) and 1 Villa (US$1785 per Villa per night). There is a central dining room and bar area and Benguerra Lodge also has a pool overlooking the beach now.

BENGUERRA LODGE FISHING
Benguerra boats are twin-engine, 7 metre AceCats (max 4 anglers), at US$80 per hour, excludes fuel @ US$1.90 per litre. Charters are for the first six hours per day, thereafter no charge. This excludes fuel @ US$1.90 per litre -- to be settled directly with the lodge. Saltwater Fly-fishing (max 2 per boat): US$84 per hour, excludes fuel as above, but includes specialised boat and guide. Fly Rod Hire US$30 per day – all settled directly at lodge. Please contact us for updated information on the activities and excursions price lists. For light tackle and fly fisherman Benguerra has more to offer than Bazaruto -- easy boat access to the gaps between Bazaruto/Benguerra and Benguerra/Magaruque, where one can usually count on finding gamefish feeding. But Benguerra is not as good for rock and surf as Bazaruto, though the northern point of the island is an excellent place for various gamefish which feed close inshore, especially kingfish (trevally), including GTs. The island has 7 km of sea frontage, but only one vehicle, used primarily for picnics and island tours, not for driving on the beaches. The lodge is too far from the island’s northern point for beach anglers to walk, but at nominal cost one of the island boats will drop beach anglers there (or the southern tip of Bazaruto) and collect them at a pre-arranged time. In the past couple of years more marlin fishing has been done out of Benguerra Lodge, with good results, than from Bazaruto Lodge, in spite of Bazaruto being closer to the traditional marlin grounds. The continental dropoff lies some 20 km out to sea directly through the gap between Bazaruto/Benguerra islands, with good general game fishing all the way out.

.AZURA, BENGUERRA ISLAND... …the all new luxury eco-boutique Azura -meaning “beautiful blue” - brings a new height of opulence to Mozambique making it a perfect island getaway. It is situated on the north west of Benguerra Island and originally opened in December 2007. It boasts 14 private Beach Villas and Presidential Villa. It also offers a spa combining signature treatments based on local ingredients and traditions. The main area offers formal dining, lounge, feature Star Bar, library with TV and internet access. A 40 foot traditionally carved dhow is moored offshore and available for guests use at all times. Food is of a focal point at Azura. The resort’s top international chef’s signature dishes will not dissatisfy the discerning traveller. Where to eat is as much of a decision as what to eat. The fine dining restaurant has magnificent uninterrupted views, the Gheko Deck offers informal dining with your feet in the sand, and the Star Bar offers fresh sushi. Azura also boasts an extensive wine cellar, which includes fine wines flown direct from the owner’s chateau in France’s Loire Valley!

These designs are further complimented by skilfully carved beams and traditional artwork beneath a local thatch roof. The villas are situated a mere stones throw from the beach, yet designed to allow for privacy and seeming isolation. Nestled amidst the indigenous trees and bush, the villas have been meticulously built to create your own private sanctuary (making it an ideal honeymoon destination). Rates include all meals and snacks (taken in the main restaurant or star bar), Mozambican Butler services, half hour back and neck massage on arrival, sparkling wine in room, Land Rover island drives, sunset dhow cruise, EVAC medical rescue insurance. The Presidential Villa starts at US$1425.00 per night (based on 2 persons add US$4200 for extra entire villa) and US$4800.00 per night (high season). Activities available at Azura are based in and around the sea. Guests can snorkel, dive, fly fish or game fish, swim with dolphins, track down humpback whales on their migration, or go out with the Dugong Protection Team and search for the shy endangered mammal. Azura caters extremely well for those non-anglers. Tours of the island can be enjoyed. Alternatively take a dhow and picnic to a deserted beach. The community at Azura are major contributors and stakeholders within the Azura Rainbow Fund which supports a variety of social and environmental projects, from building a new school, helping the area after the recent Cyclone Favio, to forming the Dugong Protection Foundation, which protects Africa’s last viable population of this endangered mammal.

How to get there
GETTING TO THE BAZARUTO ARCHIPELAGO
One can drive to Vilanculos, 750 km north of Maputo. But with daily flights, flying is the simplest option.

For the Bazaruto Archipelago: There are Johannesburg/Vilanculos flights several days a week, either with LAM (R2 500.00 plus taxes of R1550) or with TTA Pelican Airlines, who operate daily flights from JIA, (+- R3600.00 + taxes R915). TTA flights are more direct, and better suited times, though these fares are subject to availability (categories silver/gold/platinum).

With LAM, Jhb/Vilanculos flights are on regular basis.
